Creators: Fred Greenhalgh and Bill Dufris
The Dark Tome is a new audio fiction podcast by Fred Greenhalgh (FinalRune Productions) and Bill Dufris (Mind’s Eye Productions).
Fred is best known for pioneering field recording techniques for radio drama and writing/producing his own original work (including award-winning apocalyptic saga The Cleansed), as well as being host of the audio drama anthology podcast Radio Drama Revival for 9 years.
Bill started his career in audio drama with legendary BBC Director Dirk Maggs in the early 1990s, before starting his own production company. After 15 years in London he returned to the US and has worked extensively on audiobooks and audio dramas since then, including HorrorScopes, Titanium Rain, Startruck, The Perhapanauts and Molly Danger.
In 2014, Bill and Fred were commissioned by Audible to develop the audio version of Locke and Key, the graphic novel saga by Joe Hill and Gabe Rodriguez. Along with co-creators at AudioComics, they adapted and produced the award-winning 13.5 hour audio drama with over 50 cast members including Haley Joel Osment, Tatiana Maslany, Kate Mulgrew, and Stephen King. Locke and Key was recorded on location in New England – in catacombs, creepy old houses, woods, beaches, the trunks of cars.
The duo created The Dark Tome after an opportunity to work with Joe Hill presented itself in the adaptation of Joe’s short story, “The Devil on the Staircase.” The two worked with other horror and speculative fiction writers they knew to license stories for the first season, and The Dark Tome was born! The mythos of Cassie Pinkham, Simpson Falls, and the wider strange ‘sideways’ world, organically sprouted from there.
Sadly, Bill Dufris passed in 2020 but the spirit of Dark Tome lives on through a new, ongoing dark fiction feed curated by Fred Greenhalgh called Undertow.
